Author Bio:
Evangelene was born and raised in Montreal Canada. She currently lives with her husband who at times drives her nuts. She has been going to Concordia University for over ten years as a Classical Civilization and Linguistic student. The pull to the ancient world was too great for her to let go, so she continues her education so she could feel closer to the world she identifies with. I was on the hill behind the palace overlooking the city. There amongst the undergrowth was a headstone.
Died in battle was engraved into the stone.
Here lay my husband. I was told that the bodies of all the soldiers were buried in the battlefield were they fell, but he had asked that if anything were to happen to him, he be brought back here.
I collapsed in front of his headstone.
“My love, now where am I supposed to go? Now that you’ve left me.” Tears blurred my eyes.
“Why? Why did you bring me here, to a strange place, where I could be no true use for you? Did I really cause you so much trouble?” I swallowed hard, my insides burning. “If it meant reliving every moment again, I would go through worse for you, Leonidas, my love. I wanted to scream. I wanted to yell at you, call you names, but this is the last time that I will be with you. How could I ruin this moment?” I lay down and fell asleep crying.
A hand touching my face awakened me. I jerked up and produced my dagger, but before I could attack, I realized it was a woman.
She was beautiful, with long sandy colored hair, she wasn’t taller than I was, but she was slender. She wore a tight leather breastplate and a lined skirt that stopped before her knees. The bow that she had behind her back was larger than her, taking up most of her body, but I noticed it had no string.
“Oh, I’m so sorry, I woke you? And here I thought I could bring you over without any problems.” She tilted her head and smirked.
“Psykhe, get up, we need to go now.” She reached out her hand and waited.
“Who are you? And how do you know my name?” I was frightened then. My defenses were down and I was weak.
“Come on, get up, it’s time.” She pulled me up effortlessly and began to yank my arm, but I pulled my arm away.
“I’m not finished yet,” I yelled. “I’m not going anywhere, especially with you,” I huffed.
I wasn’t ready to leave Leonidas just yet. I wanted another moment, just one more.
“He’s dead; you do know that, right? Sitting here isn’t going to bring him back. Plus, I don’t really have the time for this,” she said as she walked up behind me.
I turned my head, my eyes wide. How could someone be so callous?
“He was a great king and I was very happy when he prayed to me every day, but the lives of mortals are fleeting,” she said, looking at his tombstone.
“How can you say that to me? I would rather die than be without him!” I screamed.
“That,” she said, “can be easily arranged.”
I felt a hard punch from behind; all my air escaped me. I looked down at my stomach and could see a large blade sticking out of me. My blood stained my dress. I gasped and fell to the ground, my blood warming my cold body. I could see the woman’s face over me as she shook her head. I reached to touch her face, but I began to see black…

Sovereign Plague

Title: Sovereign Plague
Author: Rachel A Olson
Genre: Post-Apocalyptic PNR 18+
Release Date: August 29, 2014
Blitz Host: Lady Amber's Tours

In the year 3127, the human race faces possible extinction when a viral outbreak spreads like wildfire during a never ending cold spell. Former militia member Barrick Hardison has been forced to use his training for survival before, and finds himself doing it again…but this time for a woman he hardly even knows.

Lyza Guerrera has spent her entire life trying to hide in the shadows. It didn’t do her any good. An orphan from the former Puerto Rico region, Lyza’s foreign looks simply attract danger, including Barrick. Fortunately for her, Barrick doesn’t seem to have any interest in her, or anyone else for that matter.

After meeting under extreme circumstances, Barrick begrudgingly allows Lyza to tag along with him. Threatening his former employer and witnessing a near upheaval of his old militia camp has given Barrick the realization that circumstances are not only worse than he thought, but he and Lyza are stuck in the middle of it all.

When it seems like their situation can’t possibly get worse, the strength of the Defects seems to be growing with numbers, and Barrick’s sanity begins to waver amidst it all. Will he get Lyza and her precious cargo to safety or will his uncontrollable feelings and impending psychosis prevent him from reaching their much needed destination?

Barrick kneeled down next to Lyza, grabbing her hand and pulling her toward him. “Get on my shoulders.”

“What?” Lyza almost laughed in disbelief. “I’m a grown woman. A pregnant grown woman. You don’t honestly think you’re going to give me a ride on your shoulders, do you?” Barrick yanked on her hand again before forcing her leg to swing up and over his shoulder.

“Either you get on or you run. Based on the lack of color in your face and the shit you just barfed all over the floor, I think it’s safe to say you’re in no condition to run right now. So, get on.” Barrick was in no mood for games, and Lyza obviously heard it in his voice. He was sure she knew exactly why the sirens had gone off, but it apparently mattered to her what it would look like to be flying around the militia camp, perched atop Barrick’s shoulders like a toddler. Barrick smirked to himself. He was more enjoying the thought of which body part would be closest to his head while she played toddler.

“I’m a seriously dirty minded fuck,” he mumbled to himself.

“What was that?” Lyza asked, clinging as best she could to Barrick as he rose effortlessly to his feet.

“Nothing, doll,” he responded with a clearing of his throat. “Hold on tight.”

Somewhere amidst her forty-hour job and playtime with her son, Rachel finds time to walk the streets of worlds only existing on manmade paper. She resides in small college town Northwestern Nebraska with her son, just a few blocks away from her parents. She enjoys socializing with adults, sipping sweetened iced tea, and head banging to music that doesn't carry a beat worth the effort of rock star hair slinging.

Sometimes the things that go bump in the night are real.
Happy birthday to me.  I close my eyes and burrow into my pillow as I try to sleep, as I try to escape this life. It’s a life I never thought I’d have, a life I most certainly don’t want. I’m still feeling sorry for myself as the blackness of sleep finally overtakes me. I don’t know what time it is when I shoot straight upward like a rocket.  Something had yanked me from the oblivion of sleep, something loud and shrill scraping my window. My room is completely dark and I glanceat my clock in confusion. 3:00 a.m. As my heart pounds hard against my ribcage, I quickly scan every corner of the room. In the last few hours, dark shadows had migrated onto my pink walls, but they’re familiar, nothing out of the ordinary, although in the night, they seem twisted and scary. I remain motionless as I allow the sleep-induced fog to clear from my brain. As I sit, I feel common sense and logic slowly returning. Of course nothing had touched my window because my bedroom is on the second floor. Nothing can reach it.  And there are no trees near enough to brush against it.  It was just a dream. It was only a dream. I chant it silently to myself like a mantra as I consciously slow my breathing down, hoping that my racing pulse will soon follow. It was only a dream. But just as I’m calming down, I hear it again. A high-pitched shrill shriek, reminiscent of fingernails on a chalkboard, scraping down my window. I gasp and pull my feet up to my chest, which is when I notice the temperature. I notice because I can see my breath. Timidly, I blow a puff out again, watching the way my breath turns white in the air. Holy crap.  Oh my God.  What the hell? The sound stops and stillness surrounds me once again, the silence so loud that it echoes in my ear. Nothing moves around me, the shadows are perfectly still as they twist across my wall.  They look like mangled fingers and arms and legs, but they don’t move. My legs are weak and shaking, but I know I have to move.   I have to move off my bed because it feels like something is under it.  Something terrifying. With a leap, I bound across the room, my feet hitting the floor several feet away from the edge of my bed. The floor is ice cold, as though it had been covered in a blanket of snow. I’m trembling as I race to the far wall and check the thermostat.  Because that’s the only explanation.  I must’ve bumped it earlier, I must’ve turned the AC way down. But the luminous numbers stare at me in contradiction. 74 degrees. It must be broken.  It has to be broken. My breath is coming in pants now, terrified, anxious pants. My fear isn’t logical.  I know there’s nothing here.  I’m the only one in this room. Or am I? The air seems to push at me from all around, something dark, something heavy, something real.  Something unseen. My fingers shake, my legs tremble, and then all of a sudden, they can no longer support my weight.  I go down like a pile of bricks, collapsing onto the floor.  I lie still because I can’t move, because something seems to sit on my chest, holding me down. The shadows start to move, to slither across the walls, to reach and pull and dance. I struggle to focus, to see what it is. But all I can see are the numbers on the thermostat suddenly moving, rapidly counting down from 74 to 20. Twenty degrees? The air is frigid as I suck it in, as I try to pull the ice crystals into my mouth so I can breathe. All of a sudden, there’s a blackness in front of me.  It hovers over me, a shapeless mass, sucking in the cells of the air, the atoms and the molecules.  It’s darker than the blackness of my room, blacker than the blackest black. Something is here. With me.  “Dad?” I whisper in a white puff.  Because what else could it be? I reach out a finger to touch it, and then I can’t see anything else, because the darkness of it surrounds me, bleeding into everything else, even my vision.   The shriek is back, screaming into my ears, bleeding into my brain. Then there’s nothing.
