Saturday night arrived all too soon.
I’d been busy all day packing the bedroom, and was now finishing up packing my studio, sorting through the tubes of acrylic paint and brushes, deciding which ones to keep for shipping or discard. I wrapped up my canvases and finished taping boxes shut when Drake arrived home from the hospital after spending time signing papers and seeing the last of his patients.
He popped his head in the doorway.
“Hey,” he said, his gaze moving around the room, taking in the emptiness of it, and the boxes piled in the center of the room. “Time to get ready.”
I exhaled heavily, unable to hide the reluctance I felt about going to Michael and Claire’s house for the going away party.
Drake heard me and forced a smile. “I know, I know…” He came over to where I stood surrounded by packing boxes and put his hands on my shoulders. “You don’t have to come if you don’t want to. I’ll understand.”
“It doesn’t matter to you?”
He shook his head. “I’d like to be with you, I’d like you beside me, but I understand if you’d rather not have to face Claire. And Sam.”
“Sam, too?” I said and made a face. Of course I knew Sam would be there along with all the other interns, residents and staff who worked with Drake, as well as faculty from the medical college and some of Drake’s senior students.
“Unfortunately.” Drake bent down and looked in my eyes. “If you come, I promise to keep your hand in mine the entire time we’re there. You won’t have to deal with either of them alone, if that’s what you’re worried about.”
I shook my head. “No, it’s fine. Before the safari, I could have spent time with Claire while you did your rounds with your students and the staff, saying goodbye, but now…”
“Michael promised Claire would be on her best behavior.”
I laughed ruefully at that. What was Claire’s best behavior? I had visions of her standing off to the side of the room, whispering with Sam. It didn’t make me feel like going to the party. It felt more like I would be going to an inquisition.
I had to tell myself that I would be leaving with Drake for Manhattan on Tuesday morning. Soon, Claire and Sam would be far away.
“I’ll be fine,” I said and forced a smile. “I’m a big girl. I’ll hold a drink in my hand and smile, listen to conversations, and try to avoid them both.”
“I’ll have your arm hooked through mine. You’ll be my arm candy.”
“Arm candy?” I said with a laugh. “If you put it that way…”
He pulled me into his arms and rocked me gently back and forth. “Arm candy. Brain candy. Heart candy. All three.”
“When you put it like that, how can I refuse?”
I had a quick shower and dressed, putting on the sundress that Drake liked so much, despite it being informal, but he wanted me to wear it so I complied. Drake came into the bathroom while I was standing in front of the mirror curling my hair and he sat on the edge of the tub, watching me get ready as he liked to do.
“Are you sure this dress is appropriate for tonight?” I asked, catching his eye in the mirror.
“Entirely appropriate. It’s my favorite dress. I want to gaze at you and enjoy how the fabric hugs your curves.”
I smiled to myself and curled a long lock of hair, then tucked it into my updo with a bobby pin.
“You’re ready to go?” I asked as I applied some lip gloss. I checked him out. He looked devastatingly handsome, of course. His black hair was shiny and slightly wild, but incredibly sexy over his dark arched brows and blue blue eyes fringed with thick black lashes.
God, he was gorgeous…

Stephanie Summers is a paranormal and contemporary romance author. She recently from West Virginia University with a degree in accounting, though writing is her true passion. At the ripe old age of 30, she finally decided it was time to put aside the thought that she didn't have what it took to write a novel and began writing her first story.
She has since published her first paranormal series, The Willow Creek Vampires Series, with Craving (Book #1), Haunting (Book #2), and Awakening (Book #3) available now. He stood looking out the window at nothing.
Not turning toward her, he spoke. “You were never in any real danger. You know that, right?”
“I get that, but that’s not what I’m having issues with… that’s not what scares me.”
“What is it then?”
“You.”
His body stiffened as he heard the fear in her voice. His head turned slightly in her direction.
“You scared me before, but I’m absolutely terrified of you now. You bit me when you said you wouldn’t, and I’ve never seen someone be as violent as you were. I’ve never seen someone die right in front of me, let alone witnessing such a violent death.”
“I didn’t bite you.” He continued looking out the window again, and his body relaxed.
“I saw my blood dripping off your teeth and running down your chin. Now you’re going to lie about it?”
“It wasn’t your blood. It was mine. I meant it when I said I wouldn’t feed on you in front of all them.”
“Oh… I saw the blood, and I thought,” she trailed off in mid-sentence. “I guess that’s why it didn’t hurt. I thought maybe you just made it so I didn’t feel it.”
“I wanted them to believe I was feeding from you, so I bit the inside of my lip. That’s why I kept my mouth on your neck for so long. I knew some of them were watching us. If I hadn’t pretended to feed on you, things could have turned sour fast, and it’s not like I could tell you my intentions without alerting everyone else.”
He turned to face her just as she reached up and placed her hand on the spot his mouth had been focused on. He saw lust flash briefly in her eyes. Though he would never admit it to her, he enjoyed being close to her. He planned to tease her about kissing her and sucking on her neck, and he was going to act like he was the pig she thought he was, but he would never tell her how much he enjoyed being so close to her. His lips ached to kiss her again.
“Then what was with killing that guy? All for a necklace?” Sabine shook her head and looked at him incredulously. “You could just buy another.”
He looked down at the floor. He couldn’t stand making eye contact with her while he revealed the story so close to his heart. “It isn’t just a necklace. It’s my mother’s, and later belonged to my wife. That necklace is the only item I possessed that belonged to either of them, and he stole it from me.”
“I didn’t realize you still had feelings like that. You made it seem like you don’t care about anything,” she said, moving to the side of the bed closest to him and sat down.
“I do care about a few things. I may put on a tough exterior, but some feelings linger.”
“So, it has sentimental value... couldn’t you just take it back? Did you have to kill him?”
“Yes, I did. Everything I owned as a human was stripped from me by my father when I refused him. I managed to hide the necklace in a place he never suspected, and I retrieved it later. So, you see, it wasn’t just that it was theirs, but it was the only thing I had left from my mortal life. The necklace was the last bit of myself that I could still hold on to.”

“Are you a fugitive from the law?”
He bared a perfect set of pearly white teeth any mother would be proud of and chuckled. “No. And I’ve never been arrested, either. You can relax.”
“So,” she pressed on, breathing easier once again, “you have a thing against the medical profession?”
He turned his face toward her, and she could now confirm his eyes, one rich amber with golden flecks, the other the deepest blue, were as beguiling as she’d figured. “You could say I’m a fast healer. I’ll be fine in a couple of days…Willow.”
When he spoke her name, it was as though he’d spread a coat of silky chocolate over her entire body and licked every ounce of it off with his tongue. Her palms tingled, her face flushed, and she shifted in her seat to ease the growing ache down low.
“Fast is one thing, but you’d need to be supernatural to bounce back from these wounds in a couple of days. Insert foot in mouth, Will.” She groaned and dropped her head into her hands.
“What do you mean?” His voice returned to a shaky whisper, but she heard him just fine.
She shrugged off her embarrassment and peered up at him. Enough dancing around the issue. She needed answers now that he was conscious and looking all delicious despite his injuries. So, she ignored his question and asked the first of many of her own. “Who are you?”
“My name is Greyson. Thanks for fixing me up. I’m sure you did an awesome job.”
“You’re welcome. I’m no doctor, but I make a damn good triage nurse in the wilderness when I need to. Back to you, Greyson. What the hell are you? And what actually happened out there? I can only guess, but I want the whole story. From the beginning. I don’t think it’s too much to ask…considering.”
“What if it is?”
“What if it is what?”
“Too much to ask.”

Person after person approached me to touch my hand and mumble some sort of greeting. I wasn’t exactly sure what was going on, but just played along since my father and Seth both seemed to understand. The crowd around me pressed tightly as more people tried to touch my hand. I got the feeling they understood I wasn’t going to stand around all night doing it, and would walk away as soon as I could.
“Don’t think this changes anything,” a way-too-familiar voice said into my ear. My heart beat faster, and I didn’t want to turn and confirm what I already knew. Logan was in my father’s palace. “You will still be mine. I can see our son is still here, and that’s all I need to know. This changes nothing. Once I find the last stone, I’ll be coming for you and there will be nothing your father can do to stop me.”
I turned to fire a retort at him even though I had no clue what I was going to say. He backed up and flashed me one of his model Logan smiles before fading among the guests who were still trying to touch me. I stared dumbfounded and watched him go.
Coming to my senses, I looked around the room to see if I could see the rest of my family and friends. The mob was too tight, and I just wasn’t tall enough. I dropped my hand and began to push through the mass of people to where my father and mother were. Everyone parted and allowed me through. Seth came out of the crowd also just as easily as I had. When I reached my parents, my father bent down and touched his forehead to mine.
“I’m so happy you returned to us,” he told me.
My mother beamed from beside him. They were beyond happy. This was probably the day they both had been waiting their whole lives for. I couldn’t ruin it by telling them about Logan. I’d have to wait and talk to Kye. This was their wedding day, and they deserved to have it without worry. Even with everything, I was happy to be there with them.
I looked around the hall of people. Once I reached my father, everyone took that as their cue to go back to their little groups and enjoy the night. Seth waited just below us on the stairs as he watched me. I wanted to decipher his smile, but I was too worried now about Logan. I scanned the crowd and my father’s words rung way too true in my head. I was happy to have returned to him, but unfortunately, I wasn’t the only one who returned.
