~Excerpt~
“You know, sometimes it sucks counting
calories. What I really want is a big fat burger and some greasy fries.” I
sighed and stabbed at the lettuce on my plate.
“Preach on, sister! I’ve been on a
diet since I was fourteen. I allow myself to have one cheat day a month where I
can eat crap. I think I would die without chocolate.” Roxie smiled around her
fork.
“Well, pretty soon my waistline won’t
matter anymore. I think I see a lot of ice cream in my future.” Kayla patted
her still very flat stomach.
“Yeah, I’m slightly jealous of all the
carbs you will be allowed to eat.” Roxie laughed.
“The carbs will be nice, but what
about the kid I need to pop out in seven months?” Kayla smiled, anxiously.
“Are you scared?” Roxie asked.
“Terrified.” Kayla responded,
honestly.
“You’ll be fine. It’s not like you’re
totally alone.” She patted Kayla’s hand.
“Yeah, I know. I had just hoped Sean
would want to be a part of this.”
This was news to me, I straightened up
and listened.
“He got off the phone as quick as he
possibly could. He made some vague promise to call me back later, but he never
did.” She shook her head, sadly. “I never wanted this to happen. I always
wanted to be married before I had a baby, to someone that would never leave me
when things got tough.” She stopped talking and stared out the window for a
while.
Roxie shot me a “say something!” look.
“Things don't always go as planned. I
mean, look at me, I never imagined I would find out the man I just said I would
marry was already married. You make the best of what life hands you.”
